History of the Charity

It all began in 1985 when two friends began discussions to respond to the needs that had sprung up in the beautiful, idyllic country of their birth – Sri-Lanka  –  following a series of civil disturbances. The two spent several months discussing the troubled history of Sri-Lanka and the plight of its industrious and charming people.  These deliberations included a number of dedicated and capable persons with wisdom and foresight.

The conclusion was to form a welfare charity of volunteers in the UK who were willing to give of their time and skill free for the betterment of the disadvantaged poor in the remote villages of Sri Lanka. The aim was to enable the people, support their initiatives, encourage the infrastructure, reconcile the communities and to partner with them in seeing their hopes and aspirations fulfilled.  It was to give a hand up rather than a hand down.

Out of all these deliberations was formed the organisation now known as Hope Outreach UK.  This UK Registered Charity, run entirely by volunteers, with no paid staff or over heads, has been active for the last 25 years in Sri-Lanka bringing hope and relief to several hundred thousand needy people.
